Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder in Phoenix, AZ

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental illness characterized by obsessive-compulsive behaviors that can leave individuals feeling powerless against intrusive thoughts or urges. At Serenity Mental Health Centers, our mission is to empower our patients to regain control over their OCD tendencies, enabling them to lead more fulfilling lives. If you're experiencing the symptoms of this mental illness, know that help is available in Phoenix, AZ.

Several treatment methods are available for managing OCD, with prescription medication being the most common. However, we also offer alternative approaches, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) and ketamine therapy.

TMS and ketamine therapy serve as excellent alternatives to prescription medications, especially when undesirable side effects occur. TMS is a noninvasive treatment that utilizes magnetic pulses to stimulate the brain region associated with OCD symptoms. On the other hand, ketamine therapy, administered via IV, is renowned for its effectiveness in reducing depressive and anxiety-related symptoms.

Regardless of the treatment option chosen, our dedicated team stands ready to support each patient throughout their journey as we work together to find the approach that best suits their needs.

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is thought to develop due to a blend of genetic, neurological, and environmental factors. Studies indicate that brain structure and function, especially in areas that regulate anxiety and impulse control, might play a role. Having a family history of OCD or other mental health conditions can also increase one's likelihood of experiencing OCD.

OCD symptoms often include persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) that cause intense anxiety. This anxiety leads to repetitive actions or mental routines (compulsions) aimed at reducing that distress. Here's a closer look at common symptoms:

  • Obsessions:

    • Fear of germs or contamination
    • Worries about harming oneself or others
    • Need for symmetry or perfect order
    • Intrusive, violent, or inappropriate thoughts
  • Compulsions:

    • Frequent hand-washing or excessive cleaning
    • Checking things repeatedly (like doors or appliances)
    • Arranging or counting items to maintain a specific order
    • Performing mental rituals, such as repeating phrases

If I could give Serenity a 7 star review I would. From the time I walked in to the time I left everyone was so beyond sweet and amazing. It was my first experience back to a psychiatrist in a few years and my experience was wonderful to say the least. Mental health is so important and so is going somewhere where they believe the same and want the best for you. I truly felt welcomed and comfortable at Serenity which is a huge thing when going to somewhere like this.

My psychiatrist is named Dr. Colvin and he is an excellent person to count on for aid with mental health. He has prescribed medicine for me that has worked wonders in my life, and he continues to meet my concerns by providing more medication when needed. Alongside him, the staff is extremely flexible with their availability, and whenever I’ve needed to change a date on the calendar for appointments, they have been swift and generous to meet those needs as well. I’d recommend Serenity to anyone that is struggling to battle the demons in their head; they have changed my life and I know they will do the same for you as well.

For years I have struggled with my mental health and have seen countless doctors. This is the first facility that truly has helped. Dr. Clay and his staff do quick and amazing work. They make you feel heard and make sure to find the proper treatment for you.

Dr. Clay has given me my life, family, and friends back to me. When I first started seeing Dr. Clay, I was so depressed and anxious that I didn’t go out of the house. Dr. Clay’s medical assistant on my first appointment told me that he would never give up on me and he never has. Flash forward to now, and I’m seeing my friends, family, going out to run errands on my own, and even going to see my beloved sister in Colorado March 1st with our daughter. I am SO thankful for Dr. Clay and his team at Serenity Mental Health. They are a huge blessing and I feel so lucky to have found them!

I’ve been going here for about a year and I just want to say this doesn’t feel like a business whatsoever. When you walk in you’re met with such amazing human beings who are there to help you every step of the way through your mental health journey. My provider Dr Colvin is incredible and very understanding and helpful. He tailors my treatment plan to MY needs and listens. I’m doing TMS currently and already see an improvement. The tech I have, Olivia is full of joy and kindness. I look forward to seeing her every appointment. They offer financial aid for different treatments which have absolutely saved my life. Their main priority is to make sure you are healthy and happy, rather than the money. I recommend this place to anyone who would benefit from psychiatric care.

OCD is diagnosed through an in-depth assessment conducted by our board-certified psychiatrists. The diagnostic process typically includes a comprehensive clinical interview that examines the patient’s symptoms, past experiences, and general functioning. We specifically search for signs of obsessions, defined as persistent, unwanted thoughts, and compulsions, which are repetitive actions or mental rituals executed to reduce distress. The evaluation could also incorporate standardized questionnaires or scales to determine the intensity of the symptoms. Our meticulous diagnostic method guarantees a precise diagnosis and facilitates the creation of a customized treatment strategy that addresses the unique requirements of the individual.

When do individuals typically start showing signs of OCD?

The onset of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) can occur as early as the preschool years or may not manifest until later in adulthood. Typically, males begin exhibiting signs of OCD earlier than females, usually from ages 6 to 15. Females, on the other hand, often start experiencing symptoms in the age range of 20 to 29.

Does genetics influence OCD?

Studies suggest that OCD tends to be familial, indicating a genetic link. However, heredity is not the sole cause of the disorder. The development of OCD is usually influenced by a mix of genetic and environmental factors.

What factors increase the risk of developing OCD?

While the definitive causes of OCD remain unclear, certain risk factors are commonly associated with the disorder. These risk factors include:

  • Genetic predisposition
  • Structural variances in the brain
  • Functional anomalies in the brain
  • Environmental conditions
